John, My wife Pam and I reallly enjoyed your performance with the VJO a few weeks ago @ Orchestra Hall in Detroit. You and the band were excellent and made me appreciate live jazz with a world class ensemble. Having a drummer in the family (my teenage son Shae) helped me appreciate the subtle nuances and rhythm changes that you weaved throughout the musical sets in Detroit. Good luck with all of your future endeavors and thanks again for a great musical experience.

when you practice do you always wear hearing protection? i've been wearing studio headphones and running my metronome through them. Some of my fellow drummers do the same and others wear nothing and listen to the metronome through the speaker on it. is there any advantages/disadvantages that you know of?

I recently purchesed a Yamaha Maple Custom Absoulute with a 16x18" bass drum. I saw that you use one and was wondering if you use a hard case to carry it in, if so, what case do you reccomend for the little 18" bass with the riser. Right now im using a 20 inch case and it is way to big, but a 18inch tom case was too small. thank you for your help.

Dear John Riley, In my compings I incorporate the bass drum alot, but latey I have'nt been able to. I'm not sure if it is my pedal or if I'm doing something wrong. It just feels wierd. What would you recomend to develope a good technique to incorporate the bass without disrupting the ride pattern. Thank You.
